Dr John Ballard, Independent Chairman

John was Managing Director and previously CEO of GroPep Ltd until 2002, positions he held since the inception of the company in 1988. From 1991 until 1999 he was also the CEO of the Cooperative Research Centre for Tissue Growth and Repair in which GroPep was a partner. He was the foundation Chairman of PrimeGRO Ltd from 1999 until 2002 and is currently a Director of Australian Orthopaedic Innovations Pty Ltd and Vice President of AusBiotech Ltd, the Australian biotechnology industry association. He is a biochemist by training (PhD, DSc), has authored more than 300 research publications and is an inventor of 10 patents. He was elected to the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering in 1997.

Associate Professor Mark Molloy - Facility Director APAF

Mark is a biochemist with 14 years experience in proteomics, specialising in separation sciences and quantitative mass spectrometry. He has strong interests in biomedical applications, in particular molecular cancer biology, and is developing methods to quantitatively profile changes in protein phosphorylation.

Mark conducted PhD research with Prof. Keith Williams in the fledgling APAF facility, and then went on to post-doctoral research with Prof. Philip Andrews in the Dept. Biological Chemistry at the University of Michigan Medical School.

Mark was employed as a Senior Principal Scientist at Pfizer Inc, in Ann Arbor, USA leading a team to identify biomarkers of new drug entities. He returned to APAF in 2004 to direct biomedical research projects.

Mark is an NHMRC RD Wright fellow undertaking research to identify prognostic and predictive colorectal cancer biomarkers. As facility Director he oversees the operations of APAF.

Professor Jim Piper - Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) - Macquarie University

Jim Piper was appointed DVC(R) at Macquarie University in Sydney in 2003. He was formerly the Dean of Division of Information and Communication Sciences at Macquarie University from 1997 to 2002; and previously Professor of Physics at Macquarie from 1984.

Professor Piper graduated from the University of Otago, New Zealand with a BSc Honours in Physics. He remained at the University of Otago for his doctoral research and was subsequently awarded a DPhil in Physics.

In 1971 Professor Piper accepted a Research Fellowship at Oxford University for four years before moving to Australia and taking up a position at Macquarie University as Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in Physics.

Throughout his career, Professor Piper has received many distinguished awards including the Pawsey Medal (1982), the Australian Optical Society Medal (1997) and more recently was awarded the Carnegie Centenary Professorship from the Carnegie Trust Universities of Scotland (2004).

Professor Piper has extensive expertise and experience gained from over 30 years of research in lasers, optics and photonics, and applications in micro fabrication.

Thushy Sathi - Managing Director Access Macquarie Limited

Thushy Sathi joined Access Macquarie Limited as Chief Financial Officer in March 2010 and was appointed as Managing Director in April 2011, and Director of APAF in May 2011.

Thushy is a senior finance executive with corporate experience in a range of industries including IT, telecommunications and R&D. Prior to joining Access MQ, Thushy held senior roles at HP, NICTA, Compaq, Oracle and Nestle. Thushy is a qualified CPA and holds a Master of Commerce from Macquarie University.

Thushy oversees provision of Marketing and Finance services to APAF from Access Macquarie.
