At the Australian Proteome Analysis Facility Ltd (APAF) we are continually improving access to the infrastructure provided by the MNRF, to individual scientists, students and organisations, that wish to have the latest techniques available for their research. With access to some of the top experts in proteomics and a multi million dollar infrastructure, researchers are enabled in techniques not normally possible in the local laboratory setting.
There are a number of ways in which the Research Hotel concept can work:
1. A full time access by a PhD student - Students get use of the majority of the facility except for equipment dedicated to contract services. They are trained by some of the best proteomics people in experimental design, 2D Electrophoresis, HPLC and MALDI Mass Spectrometry with some venturing into Electrospray Mass Spectrometry. The access fees for students are half the academic rate.
2. A casual Scientist visiting - Researchers can visit APAF on a more casual basis to use the available infrastructure. Usually the lead up work is done in their own lab with protein identification taking place at APAF.
3. Biotech Companies, research funding bodies, public institutions, CRCs and international organisations can place scientists within the APAF organization. For the cost of salaries and access, scientists from these groups get access to all equipment. For organizations this gives them access to expensive equipment plus proteomics experts they could not hope to acquire in their own organization.
